Edmonton, Alberta – Nichols Environmental + Engineering, a trusted leader in environmental and engineering consulting services across western Canada, is excited to announce the acquisition of Low Impact Environmental Ltd.
This acquisition brings together two western Canadian firms with complementary expertise and a shared commitment to delivering high-quality environmental consulting services. For our clients, it means access to an expanded team, broader service offerings, and increased capacity, while continuing to receive the same trusted support and responsiveness you have come to expect.
“Joining Nichols Environmental + Engineering is an exciting opportunity for our team and our clients,” said Tim Ryan, President of Low Impact Environmental Ltd. “Since 1995, Low Impact has focused on helping clients successfully navigate environmental planning, regulatory approvals, environmental compliance, and biophysical challenges. Nichols shares our commitment to technical excellence, practical solutions, and responsive client service.“
“This acquisition represents an exciting step forward for both organizations and, most importantly, for our clients,” said Barry Rakewich, President of Nichols Environmental + Engineering. “Low Impact’s success has been built on exceptional people and trusted client relationships. Our priority is to preserve that trust, support the team, and build on the strengths of both organizations to better serve our clients across western Canada.”
Low Impact brings deep regional knowledge, long-standing client relationships, and specialized upstream environmental services expertise in Saskatchewan. While there is some natural overlap in broader environmental services, Low Impact expands Nichols’ offering in a meaningful way by adding upstream, and pre-development/pre-construction capabilities that Nichols does not currently provide at scale. These capabilities strengthen Nichols’ ability to support clients earlier in the project lifecycle and give the company a stronger foundation in markets where local knowledge, operational familiarity, and established relationships matter.
Nichols brings the broader platform to support that growth. As an established environmental and engineering firm, Nichols offers technical depth across environmental assessment, remediation, reclamation and detailed site assessments, spill response, civil and geotechnical engineering, occupational hygiene, materials testing, and building condition assessments. Nichols also brings operational structure, quality reporting, project management experience, professional development, and a strong internal culture built around growth, respect, accountability, and flexibility.
Together, Nichols and Low Impact create a stronger platform for growth: one that expands service capabilities, supports clients across more stages of their projects, and creates new opportunities for employees and consultants over time.
The Right Fit
Nichols and Low Impact are the right fit: two practical, relationship-driven western-Canadian companies with complementary expertise and a shared commitment to responsive client service. Low Impact brings more than 30 years of upstream environmental experience, established client relationships, and deep Saskatchewan knowledge. Nichols brings 29 years of broader environmental and engineering expertise, project support, and operational capacity.
Together, the companies can support more stages of client work while building on the strengths that have made each business successful.
People and Relationships First
Low Impact’s strength lies in the people doing the work, the consultants who hold trusted client relationships, and the knowledge they bring to every project. Nichols recognizes that these relationships, experience, and regional insight are central to the acquisition and to Low Impact’s continued success.
Steady Now, Stronger Over Time
Nichols will take a careful, staged approach to the transition. The immediate focus is keeping work moving, supporting the people and relationships that make Low Impact successful, and avoiding unnecessary disruption. Integration will happen over time, where it clearly strengthens the work or client experience.
Keeping the Conversation Open
Nichols is committed to open, direct communication throughout the transition. Not every answer will be available immediately, but the company will share what it knows, be clear about what is still being worked through, and make space for questions, feedback, and honest conversation.
